Stockwell Farms Arnica Oil (TM)  

Arnica Oil has long been used topically for bruises and muscle damage so it may not be surprising that it could help the stiffness and pain of osteoarthritis. In this condition the muscles often are damaged and atrophied contributing to the overall joint pain. My wife has severe hip osteoarthritis and uses the arnica oil that I make several times a day. Hawthorn Berry Heart Syrup

Common Uses: Hawthorn leaves, berries and blossoms have traditionally been used for digestive ailments, dyspnea, kidney stones, cardiovascular disorders, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The main focus of research today is regarding its value for the heart and cardiovascular system.

Recent clinical studies: Hawthorn is starting to become recognized in medical research as a supplement to standard drug therapy that can improve patient cardiovascular conditions. A recent (2003) meta-analysis of rigorous randomized, double blind, placebo controlled clinical concluded that treatment with hawthorn was more beneficial than placebo for tests of maximum work load and pressure-heart rate product. Patient dyspnea and fatigue symptoms improved significantly with hawthorn compared to placebo.

Some of hawthorn’s positive effects are believed to involve strengthening heart contractions (inotropic activity), improving blood flow, improving the integrity of the blood vessel walls, and improving the oxygen utilization by the heart. Hawthorn appears to provide a promising treatment for early stages of New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class II congestive heart failure (CHF). Hawthorn also has been shown to lower blood lipids including total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides. Hawthorn also lowers blood pressure (hypotensive activity) and reduces oxidation of LDL cholesterol which is considered to be a primary cause of atherosclerosis

Active ingredients and dosage: As with most whole herbs, hawthorn has many active ingredients and work synergistically to produce a range of benefits for the cardiovascular system. It is believed that the major active components are the flavonoids and oligomeric proanthocyanides (OPC), so extracts are usually standardized to 2.2% flavonoids or 18.75% OPCs. Common doses range from 120 to 240 mg, three times a day for the standard extract or 2 to 4 ml, three times a day for the tincture.

Safety, side affects, drug interactions:.Safety is generally not a concern with hawthorn since it is classified as a class 1 botanical which indicates that it can be safely used in appropriate dosage.Adverse side effects from the hawthorn were non-existent or very mild and transient. Hawthorn has not been shown to interact with drugs. An interaction study with digoxin and hawthorn showed no altering of the pharmacokinetic parameters for digoxin. However, the general view is that hawthorn may potentiate or inhibit some drugs used for heart failure, hypertension, angina and arrhythmias, so hawthorn use should be monitored carefully if used with them.

Conclusion: Hawthorn has been shown to lower heart rate, improve exercise tolerance, and possibly lower serum lipids. Some physicians are informing patients about the potential benefits of hawthorn in the treatment of early stages of congestive heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis, angina, and minor arrhythmia.
